Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
A Gelco flue liner replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs between $2,400 and $4,800 installed, depending on liner diameter, chimney height, and access. We stock Gelco-compatible stainless steel liners on the truck and can complete most replacements in a single day. Most homeowners in Fort Lauderdale discover they need this when their inspector flags it during a routine sweep, or when they notice flaking metal, rust staining on the firebox floor, or a smell that drifts back into the house even with the damper open.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco manufactures flexible stainless steel chimney liners in diameters from 4 inches to 12 inches, in both 316L and 304 alloy grades. If your liner has a Gelco label still attached near the top plate, you’ll see the alloy type and diameter printed right on it. No label? Measure the inside diameter of the old liner where it exits the flue tile. We regularly replace Gelco liners paired with wood stoves, gas inserts, and open masonry fireplaces across Fort Lauderdale.
One compatibility gotcha: Gelco makes both smooth-wall and corrugated liners. The smooth-wall versions carry a higher BTU rating for wood-burning appliances and are typically specified for anything burning solid fuel. If you’re running a gas insert, the corrugated 316L liner works fine and costs less. We’ll match the liner to your appliance’s exact BTU output and draft requirements, not just the diameter.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Gelco liners are widely interchangeable with equivalent 316L liners from DuraFlex and HeatShield, provided the diameter and wall profile match. We stock genuine Gelco and also carry DuraFlex and HeatShield as alternates. For most Fort Lauderdale homes, the deciding factor is availability and your budget. We’ll quote both options and explain the difference before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flaking or peeling metal inside the firebox. This is the most common early warning. The inner wall of a 304 alloy liner begins to corrode and shed thin metal flakes that fall into the firebox. Florida’s humidity accelerates this, especially in homes near the Intracoastal where salt air reaches the flue.
- Rust stains on the firebox floor or hearth. Condensation from combustion gases mixes with creosote and eats through the liner wall. What drips down is acidic and leaves reddish-brown stains that are hard to remove.
- A smoky or campfire smell inside the house with the damper open. When the liner develops gaps or holes, the draft weakens and combustion gases back up into the living space instead of venting out. This is a carbon monoxide concern, even if the odor is subtle.
- Excessive creosote buildup despite regular sweeping. A damaged liner creates turbulence in the draft, which cools gases faster and deposits more creosote on the liner walls. If your sweep intervals keep getting shorter, the liner is usually the culprit.
- Visible sagging or separation at the liner seams. Flexible liners can pull apart at the coupling bands over time, especially if the liner was undersized for the flue or installed without proper insulation. We see this regularly in older Fort Lauderdale homes where the original liner was a budget install.

DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a flue liner means working on a roof, pulling a metal liner through a masonry flue, and making connections that have to hold against combustion gases and creosote. We don’t recommend DIY here. The risk of a bad connection is silent and serious: carbon monoxide leaking into the wall cavity or living space without any visible sign until symptoms happen.
What you can safely do before calling: check the firebox for metal flakes and rust staining, note any odor changes when the fireplace has been running, and look up the diameter and alloy if the Gelco label is still legible. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. For anything else, call (754) 354-1451. Nathan Corliss will talk through what you’re seeing and give you a straight answer before anyone climbs a ladder.
FAQs
A 316L Gelco liner installed correctly and swept annually lasts 20 to 25 years in Fort Lauderdale’s climate. A 304 alloy liner lasts 10 to 15 years, less if you live within a few blocks of the ocean. Salt air and humidity are the two things that kill liners early around here. Call (754) 354-1451 and we’ll tell you what alloy you have and what’s left in it.
Small pinholes in an otherwise sound liner can sometimes be patched with a stainless steel repair sleeve, but if the metal is flaking, separating, or sagging, replacement is the honest answer. Patching a failing liner is a temporary fix that costs money and buys you a season at most. We’ll show you the camera footage and let you decide with your own eyes.
Most Gelco replacements take four to six hours from setup to cleanup. That includes removing the old liner, pulling the new one, securing the connections, running a final draft test, and photographing the finished work. We arrive in the window we give you, and we leave the roof and hearth cleaner than we found them.
We stock 6-inch and 8-inch 316L liners on the truck in both corrugated and smooth-wall profiles. Larger diameters or unusual lengths may take two to three days to source from our supplier. Either way, you’ll know before anyone starts work whether the part is in hand or on the way.
