Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Crown Repair: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

If your Copperfield chimney crown is spalling, cracked, or letting water run down the brick, we carry the right repair materials and have installed them across Fort Lauderdale for over two decades. A Copperfield crown repair or full recast typically runs $350 – $850 installed in this market, depending on whether we’re sealing hairline cracks or tearing out and repouring the whole crown. Most jobs are done in a single visit. You usually find out the crown failed the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, efflorescence on the brick outside, or a drip you hear during a summer downpour. Down here, it’s rarely one freeze-thaw cycle that kills a crown. It’s months of UV, salt air, and rain working a small crack until it becomes a channel.

Key takeaways:

  • We stock Copperfield-compatible crown repair materials and common Copperfield crown dimensions on the truck
  • Most Fort Lauderdale crown repairs land between $350 and $850 installed
  • Written price before we start, written guarantee when we finish
  • We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

The Copperfield crown is the poured or precast concrete cap that sits on top of the chimney chase, and the repair approach depends on which style your home has. Copperfield chimneys in Fort Lauderdale generally fall into two camps: factory-built models with a precast crown that shipped with the unit, and masonry-style Copperfield installations where the crown was poured on site. Both fail in the same Florida way, but the fix is not the same.

The compatibility gotcha most owners hit is measuring the flue tile opening, not the outside chase dimension. A crown that fits a 13-inch by 13-inch flue tile is not the same part as one that fits a 13-inch by 17-inch oval. We have pulled off crowns that were ordered online to the outside measurement and found them useless. Before we quote anything, we measure both the outside chase and the flue tile opening, then check the overhang. Copperfield crowns should overhang the chase by at least two inches to shed water. Many original installations we see in Fort Lauderdale only have an inch, which is one reason they fail early.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Copperfield no longer sells replacement crowns for most discontinued model lines, and when they do, the part is often backordered. For most Fort Lauderdale homes, we recommend a poured crown using a fiber-reinforced mix rated for coastal exposure. It outperforms what the factory shipped. For factory-built Copperfield units that use a galvanized chase top rather than a concrete crown, we match with a properly sized stainless or galvanized replacement from Olympia Chimney or Famco, since Copperfield’s own chase top stock is thin.

If you can find the model plate (usually on the firebox floor or behind the lower grille), that tells us the series. If not, measurements do the job just as well.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks in the crown surface. These are the first sign. Concrete crowns expand and contract in Florida’s heat. Once hairline cracks form, rain gets in, and the wet-dry cycle widens them. Sealed early, they stay sealed. Ignored, they become structural.
  • Efflorescence on the chimney brick below the crown. That white powdery deposit is dissolved minerals from inside the masonry. It means water has been moving through the brick. The crown is almost always the entry point.
  • Spalling or chipped edges on the crown overhang. When water saturates the crown and the top surface is baked by Fort Lauderdale sun, the surface starts to pop off in thin sheets. If you see concrete flakes on the roof near the chimney, that’s crown material, not roof debris.
  • Water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace after heavy rain. By the time water gets inside, the crown crack is not small. This is the warning that says the repair is overdue.
  • Moss or plant growth on the crown. Moss holds water against the concrete all day. In a humid, rainy climate like ours, moss on a crown is not cosmetic. It’s an active moisture trap accelerating the damage.

If you see any one of these, call before the next tropical storm. A crown repair is far cheaper than rebuilding the top three feet of a chimney chase.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what you should expect to pay for Copperfield crown work in Fort Lauderdale, and what each price buys.

Service Typical Installed Price
Crown crack sealing (cosmetic, single application) $149 – $249
Full crown resurfacing with flexible sealant and mesh $350 – $550
Complete crown removal and recast (includes form work, mixing, and pour) $550 – $850

The spread comes down to how much of the old crown has to come out, how high the chimney is, and whether the flue tile needs a rain cap or chase cover while we’re up there. Parts and labor are priced separately on every written quote, so you see exactly what you’re paying for. And open flames from a water-damaged crown don’t happen; what happens is slower and more expensive, which is why we’d rather fix it now.

Every crown repair we do in Fort Lauderdale comes with a written guarantee. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s included. Not sold as an add-on.

DIY or Call Us?

Working on a chimney crown means working at roof height, usually with a ladder against a two-story chase. That’s the line we draw. The question is not whether you can spread sealant, it’s whether you can do it safely while standing at the edge of a Fort Lauderdale roof in full sun. We would rather you not find out the hard way.

What you can do from the ground: look for the signs in the list above. Check after a heavy rain for new staining. That’s useful, and it tells us a lot when you call. What you should not do: climb up with a bucket of concrete patch and hope it bonds. Crown repair fails as often from poor surface prep as from bad materials. If the old layer isn’t ground clean and the mix isn’t right for a coastal climate, it will peel right back off in a year. Then you have paid twice.

If the crown is bad enough that you’re reading this page, call (754) 354-1451 and we’ll quote a number before anyone climbs a ladder.

FAQs

How long does a Copperfield crown repair last?
A properly poured and sealed crown in Fort Lauderdale will last 10 to 15 years before it needs anything more than a reseal, and a lot of them last longer. Precast crowns that we patch tend to need attention every 3 to 5 years, which is why we often recommend a full recast when the original has reached the point of structural cracking. Call (754) 354-1451 and we’ll tell you which path fits your crown.

Can a cracked Copperfield crown be repaired instead of replaced?
Hairline cracks can usually be sealed as long as the concrete around them is still sound. If the surface is spalling, flaking, or the overhang has broken off, sealing won’t hold and the crown should be recast. We’ll show you what we see before recommending anything.

How long does a crown repair take on a Copperfield chimney?
A crack sealing job takes under an hour once we’re set up. A full crown removal and recast usually takes half a day, including the time for the new crown to set up enough to hold its edge. Most Fort Lauderdale jobs are done in a single visit.

Do you stock Copperfield crown repair materials or do I need to order them myself?
We stock flexible crown sealant, mesh, fiber-reinforced crown mix, and chase tops on the truck, including sizes that match most Copperfield installations. Don’t order parts online. We’ve seen too many homeowners buy the wrong size because crown measurements are not intuitive, and we’d rather match it correctly the first time. Call (754) 354-1451 for an exact quote, free of charge.

We work with crown and chase materials from Copperfield as well as DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco, and we’ll tell you which product fits your chimney rather than just using whatever is on the truck. That’s how Nathan Corliss has run this business from the start: say the price first, explain the work second, put it all in writing, and stand behind it.

Need a crown looked at? Call (754) 354-1451 and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
