Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps throughout Fort Lauderdale, and most cap replacements run between $195 and $410 installed, depending on the cap size, flue type, and roof access. We carry DuraFlex caps and matching components on our trucks, so if your existing cap is rusted through or missing, we can usually handle the swap in a single visit. The way most Fort Lauderdale homeowners discover a failed cap is not from looking up at the roof, it’s from water streaking down the fireplace wall after a hard afternoon storm, or from hearing birds inside the flue at sunrise.
That cap is doing more work here than it would in, say, Denver. Between the salt air off the Atlantic, the daily summer downpours, and the humidity that never really leaves, a cheap or poorly seated chimney cap in Fort Lauderdale fails faster than the manufacturer’s warranty suggests. If you have a DuraFlex liner system, the cap is part of that system, and the wrong replacement cap creates a leak point where rainwater runs straight down between the liner and the masonry. We see it often enough that we keep a written procedure for it.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex is a brand under the Olympia Chimney umbrella, and their caps are designed to seat onto DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems rather than onto the masonry crown directly. The cap threads or clamps onto the liner itself, which means the cap size is tied to the liner diameter, not just the flue tile opening. The common residential sizes we handle in Fort Lauderdale are 6 inch, 7 inch, and 8 inch inner diameter, with a few older homes running 5.5 inch liners that need a reducer or a specific cap collar.
Here is the compatibility gotcha most homeowners never hear: a DuraFlex cap is not universal across all Olympia products. The cap that fits a DuraFlex 304L liner will not necessarily seat correctly on an older DuraFlex aluminum liner or on a competitor’s liner that the previous owner’s roofer installed. We always verify the liner brand and diameter by looking at the tag on the liner inside the firebox or by measuring the exposed liner above the crown before quoting a cap. If you have paperwork from the original liner install, that helps; if not, we can identify it on site in about ten minutes.
As an independent service provider, Ashby Chimney Fort Lauderdale is not affiliated with DuraFlex. We stock their components because we have used them long enough to know which parts hold up in South Florida. For customers who ask about alternatives, we also carry liner and cap components from HeatShield and Gelco, and we will tell you plainly whether spending less on a generic cap is a reasonable call in your situation or a mistake you will pay for twice.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney chase. Here in Fort Lauderdale this usually shows up within a week of a heavy storm. The cap’s storm collar or mounting ring has loosened and water is tracking down the outside of the liner instead of running off the cap. It does not take a big gap; a quarter-inch opening is enough to soak the chase over a summer.
- You hear birds, bats, or rustling inside the flue. The mesh screening on a DuraFlex cap corrodes faster near the coast than inland because of the salt in the air. Once the mesh opens up, birds go straight for the dark, warm space. We have pulled intact nests out of liners that were only a year old.
- Rust streaks running down the cap or the flashing below it. This is the tell for a cap that was the wrong material from day one. DuraFlex caps are stainless, so if yours is streaking orange, it is either a galvanized aftermarket piece or a stainless cap that has been sitting in standing water because the storm collar was over-tightened and deformed.
- The cap is sitting tilted or shifted to one side. A cap that gets knocked loose by a falling branch or a pressure washer wand does not self-correct. A tilted cap leaves a gap on the high side where rain enters freely, and it also lets hot embers exit sideways toward roof decking instead of straight up. That second part is a fire hazard, not just a leak.
- You smell smoke indoors even when the damper is open and the flue was just swept. A cap that has sagged or collapsed partially will restrict the draft enough to push smoke back into the room on humid, low-pressure days. If your Fort Lauderdale chimney has never had this smell before and it started suddenly, check the cap before you blame the fireplace itself.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most DuraFlex chimney cap installations in Fort Lauderdale run between $195 and $410 installed. The low end covers a standard 6 inch round cap on a single-story home with a walkable roof pitch and an existing liner in good condition. The upper end covers larger diameters, multi-flue configurations, repairs to the storm collar or mounting hardware discovered during the swap, or jobs on steep or tall roofs that require additional setup.
What that number includes is the cap itself, the mounting hardware, the labor to remove the old cap and seat the new one, and a visual check of the liner and flashing while we are up there. You get a written price before we touch a tool, and the invoice at the end matches it. If the cap we install fails within the guarantee period, the Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair: we come back and correct it at no charge. We do not sell caps we have not seen in service in this climate, and we do not quote a cap without knowing your liner size.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things any Fort Lauderdale homeowner can safely do before calling us. First, from the ground with binoculars, look at the cap and note whether it is leaning, rusted, or missing mesh. Second, if you have a multistory home and cannot see the cap clearly, check the firebox for water staining and note whether you hear birds. That information is genuinely useful when you call, because it tells us whether we are quoting a simple cap swap or likely looking at a liner inspection as well.
What you should not do is climb onto a tile roof in July to change a cap yourself. Tile roofs in South Florida get slick with algae, the tiles crack under foot pressure, and a fall from a second-story eave is a life-altering injury, not a bad afternoon. The same goes for working off an extension ladder while reaching over the chimney crown. We have the roof harnesses, the tile repair experience, and the right DuraFlex mounting hardware on the truck. If you want to check the cap yourself from the ground and then decide, that is fair. If you want a straight quote before you commit to anything, call (754) 354-1451 and we will tell you what it costs to have us look at it.
FAQs
A stainless DuraFlex cap in Fort Lauderdale typically lasts 8 to 12 years before the mesh or mounting hardware needs attention, though caps closer to the ocean often need replacement closer to the 8 year mark because of salt exposure. If you have the cap inspected during your annual sweep, you will know it is approaching replacement long before it fails. Call (754) 354-1451 and we can tell you what condition yours is in.
It depends on the failure. Ripped or rusted mesh can sometimes be replaced if the cap frame is still solid, and a bent storm collar can often be straightened and resealed. But if the cap base is cracked, the mounting ring is warped, or the mesh has pulled away from the frame in multiple spots, replacement is the honest fix and usually costs less than trying to piece back a cap that is already past its service life.
Most DuraFlex cap replacements take 45 minutes to an hour from setup to cleanup, including removing the old cap, cleaning the mounting surface, seating the new cap, and checking the liner from above while we are up there. If we find liner damage once the cap is off, we will show you photos and stop to quote that separately before doing any additional work. You are never on the hook for work you did not approve in writing.
We stock the most common DuraFlex cap sizes on the truck: 6 inch, 7 inch, and 8 inch round stainless caps with mesh. If your liner is an unusual size or you need a custom cap for an odd flue configuration, we order it and typically have it in hand within a few business days. The fastest way to know whether yours is one we can install same visit is to call (754) 354-1451 and tell us the liner size if you know it, or have us come take a look.
