Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Fireplace Repair in Fort Lauderdale: What to Know First

We repair Gelco fireplaces and inserts throughout Fort Lauderdale as an independent Gelco service provider, and most jobs are completed in a single visit once parts are confirmed. Typical Gelco fireplace repair in this market runs between $185 and $640 depending on whether we’re replacing a thermopile, rebuilding a gas valve train, or repointing a cracked firebox. We quote the price before we touch a tool, and we put the whole scope in writing, so the invoice matches the number we gave you at the door.

Call (754) 354-1451

If your Gelco gas fireplace won’t light, won’t stay lit, or smells like gas when it runs, call us at (754) 354-1451. Nathan Corliss and our crew have been working on chimneys and fireplaces since 2002, and we see Gelco units regularly from the Las Olas Boulevard corridor out to the barrier island neighborhoods.

How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Gelco built a name in Florida with vent-free and direct-vent gas fireplaces and inserts, many of them installed during the building waves of the early 2000s. Two decades of salt air and short winter run cycles do specific things to these units. Here’s what we actually find when we open one up.

  • Pilot assemblies on older Gelco direct-vent units. The pilot tube on many Gelco direct-vent fireplaces is narrow, and in Fort Lauderdale’s humidity, condensation inside the tube causes slow rust accumulation. The symptom is a pilot that lights with a weak, lazy flame and then drops out after you release the knob. The real story is restricted gas flow in the pilot tube, not a bad thermocouple, which is why a parts-swap sometimes doesn’t fix it. We clean or replace the pilot assembly rather than guessing.
  • Thermopile voltage drift on fireplace inserts. Gelco inserts with millivolt systems rely on a thermopile to hold the main burner valve open. We routinely see units in Fort Lauderdale where the thermopile reads 280 – 320 millivolts under load instead of the 450+ the valve needs. The fireplace lights, stays on for ten minutes, then shuts off. It’s a classic gel-buildup symptom on the thermopile, and the fix is replacement, not scraping, because a scraped thermopile fails again inside a year.
  • Oxidation behind the glass on vent-free log sets. Gelco vent-free fireplaces draw combustion air from the room, and in coastal Florida, that air carries a fine salt mist. Over five or six years, the burner ports develop a white crust that makes the flame burn orange and sooty. The log set still looks intact from the sofa, which is what makes this one confusing. We pull the burner assembly, clean the ports with a fine pick set, and adjust the air shutter. The difference is immediate and it’s a fraction of what a replacement log set costs.
  • Gas valve chatter on some Gelco models. When a Gelco gas valve starts making a rapid clicking or chattering noise while the burner is on, the first suspect in most homes is the valve solenoid. But on Gelco units we see something else: the valve body itself will sometimes develop a slow internal leak around the regulator spring seat, especially after several seasons of humidity cycling. We pressure-test the valve to confirm before recommending replacement, because we don’t replace a $200 valve on a hunch.
  • Refractory panel hairline cracks in Gelco fireboxes. The ceramic fiber panels in many Gelco fireboxes hold up well, but after 15 to 20 years of heat cycling we see hairline cracks along the corners where they meet the floor panel. A hairline crack that hasn’t shifted isn’t a safety issue, and we’ll tell you that plainly. If the panel is loose or the crack opens under heat, we replace it, and we can source aftermarket refractory panels that fit Gelco fireboxes at about half the OEM price when the original part number is no longer made.

Our Gelco Fireplace Repair Process

Every Gelco job follows the same path, whether it’s a no-heat insert or a damper that won’t open. You know the price before we start and you get the repair in writing when we finish.

  1. 1
Call and diagnosis. You call (754) 354-1451, and a live person answers. We ask what the fireplace is doing, not doing, and the model number if you know it. A lot of Gelco issues get a provisional diagnosis over the phone, so you know what to expect before we arrive.
  2. 2
On-site inspection. We check gas pressure at the valve, millivolt output at the thermopile or thermocouple, pilot quality, and burner condition. Every test gets written down, not narrated.
  3. 3
The price, in writing, before work starts. We hand you the scope of work with parts and labor separated. You approve it or we don’t start. That’s the Kingswell Way.
  4. 4
The repair. On a Gelco unit we’ll use OEM parts where the original is available and still reliable. Where an OEM part is known to fail early, like certain pilot assemblies, we’ll explain the aftermarket option and let you decide. We carry recognized replacement components from Gelco, DuraFlex, and HeatShield, and we install what fits the unit, not just what’s in the van.
  5. 5
Test run and report. The fireplace gets run through a full cycle, we check for proper flame pattern and any gas odor, and leave a written report of what was done and what we saw. You see the same evidence we see.
  6. 6
The guarantee. Every repair comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge.

What Gelco Fireplace Repair Costs in Fort Lauderdale

Most Gelco repairs fall into predictable ranges. Here’s what we quote in Fort Lauderdale for the common jobs:

  • Thermocouple or thermopile replacement: $185 – $265
  • Pilot assembly cleaning or replacement: $220 – $340
  • Gas valve replacement (labor and part): $390 – $640
  • Burner port cleaning and air shutter adjustment: $150 – $210
  • Refractory panel replacement (single panel): $260 – $480 depending on panel size and availability
  • Full diagnostic visit (applied toward repair if you proceed): $95

What moves the price is parts cost on a specific Gelco model, not our labor rate. Some OEM Gelco valves and pilots are still manufactured, and some aren’t, which changes the part price significantly. We’ll tell you the number before anything gets turned on. Call (754) 354-1451 for a free estimate.

Why Fort Lauderdale Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Fort Lauderdale for Gelco Work

Fort Lauderdale has no shortage of handymen who’ll take a look at your fireplace, but a Gelco unit is a specific machine with a gas train, a safety interrupt system, and predictable failure points. We can tell the difference between a thermopile issue and a valve issue because we’ve seen enough of both to know which numbers matter. Each Ashby location runs independently under the Kingswell Guarantee, and ours is run by Nathan Corliss, who learned the trade through the vocational programs at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has been on chimneys and fireplaces in South Florida for nearly two decades. The guarantee is written, the price is written, and if the repair fails, we come back free. If your Gelco needs something beyond fireplace repair, like a flue liner, we install DuraFlex and HeatShield liners and can discuss that at the same visit.
